LIBYA USES SUPER EAGLES OF NIGERIA AS ESCAPE ROUTE TO ITS FOOTBALL FEDERATION CRISES

The Libyan Football Federation has shocked the world with the drama they put up in the second leg Nations Cup qualifier that was meant to hold on Tuesday the 15th in Benghazi.Β

Videos were seen online in various media outlets showing the Super Eagles players held and kept in an airport without food, drink, or internet for over 14 hours.

A flashback to the football crises hitting Libya tells us this federation seems to have used this as a means to avoid being humiliated by their home fans in case of a defeat against the Super Eagles of Nigeria. President of the Libyan Football Federation, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, resigned not too long ago. We know the team lamented on several players who were missing in the first leg due to internal crises, and who knows how many of them would have shown up in this game. They had no team to match the Nigerian side in front of their fans.

One thing is for sure, the Libyan Football Federation has succeeded in diverting the anger of their football fans they know awaited them before a crowd that can be hostile even to its own national team that was so weak in Uyo during the first leg.

This action definitely has set African football years behind. According to a CAF report, “the matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”

The disciplinary actions from CAF are what everyone awaits at this moment.
